Trip Update

After months of anticipation and weeks of preparation which included everything imaginable except checking the expiration date on IxChel's passport, we were so sad to not see you all. So, we decided to console ourselves with a trip to the ocean. We spent two nights at the beach, eating fried fish, playing in the sand, and under this 140 year old metal frame dock. At one point IxChel was chasing crabs and she followed one to its hole and started digging. She found a Cel phone that was still charged and functioning. We made up a crazy story that the owner of the cel phone is the person who fixes passports.

Before heading out we strolled to the end of that enormous dock to buy fish. We saw shark and stingray but we bought something that looked a bit more edible. We paid Q5 per pound - that would be about 8 cents. Plus we got to hear some fisherman stories about overturned boats and cooking at sea.

After packing the fish in ice we headed north toward Xela. We washed off the black sand from the pacific coast in the mineral waters of the Georgina hot springs.

It was a lovely trip.

I've felt so disoriented since the whole passport, airport, embassy drama.

Now we're all back to business here on Lake Atitlán, IxChel starts school again tomorrow. They cancelled classes for three weeks becuase of the Swine Flu or whatever they're calling it these days. Alberto is finishing up drawings for the non formal educacion flip charts and I'm getting started on the curriculum for a new module.

After 8 months of repairs on the Casa Pitaya in Pachitulul I started renting it out to friends and friends of friends. This is working out really well. When the house is free, we get to enjoy it. Otherwise our house is your house and we would LOVE to have you here!

looking forward to hearing from you.

Much love, Rebecca
